Effects and Uses of the Aloe Vera Plant
Since Aloe Vera is such a helpful plant, many people use it to cure anything from stomach problems to sunburns. In history, even before medieval times, people used Aloe Vera gel to help heal wounds or treat illnesses. It is a plant which has stood the test of time and helped many people, even those with diabetes. The aloe plant is made up of thick gel which is what is used in medicines and even drinks. Aloe Vera was first used as a commercial product in the fifties. The plant was squeezed until the yellow sap was gone and this sap was actually used and sold as a laxative. Aloe Vera is somewhat like an avocado plant, meaning it does not last long once open. Once the leaves are picked from the plant and the gel is removed it is highly vulnerable to rotting. Oxygen reaches the gel and turns it into goop which cannot be used for anything. Once scientists figured out how to stabilize the Aloe Vera gel it became huge in the market. Today, aloe can be found in stores and bought as whole plants; they look nice for those who like cactus looking plants. Aloe is also found in many sun burn sprays and is even an ingredient in make-up. Many lotions and wipes for skin conditions such as hemorrhoids and piles contain aloe. Today aloe is a very inexpensive yet very prized plant to have. One can walk into just about any drug or grocery store and find a large amount of natural and non natural products which contain the aloe gel. Aloe Vera has proven itself to be a very useful and helpful plant for hundreds of years and still continues to be. © 2000-2004 Pros, Inc. All rights reserved. |
